RISC OS - Internet
This guide is no longer supported, and is quite probably very out of date.
Setting up NewsHound, POPstar, Messenger, NewsBase (and Socketeer)
So, you're an Argonet user who's got fed up with NewsAgent hanging on your computer, or just an Acorn user who likes the look of these new free ISPs and wants to get online. This website should contain all the relevant information needed for you to access the Internet. If anything at any stage goes wrong in any way, please contact me with details and I will try to help.
The reason Socketeer is in brackets above is that I have included a way for Argonet users to continue to use Voyager for connection, but use Messenger, Newsbase, POPstar and NewsHound for email and news.
Requirements
I assume you have a new Boot structure (like the one on the AU200 CD). If not, I recommend you install it, as I don't think InetSetup will like you very much otherwise...
First, download all of the following and dearchive them all into an empty directory, preferably on a hard disc with some space.
Messenger, from www.intellegit.com/software/, a mail/news reader program with such features as threading of news articles.
NewsBase, from www.hep.umn.edu/~allan/newsbase/, which is the program that actually stores all your email/news, and is in charge of expiry, filtering, etc..
![]()
NewsHound and POPstar, both from www.heenan.me.uk/acorn/. These are the actual transports which fetch and send mail and news.
SysLog, from ftp://ftp.oaktree.co.uk/pub/acorn/syslog/. This keeps logs for both the above transports.
And if you wish to use Socketeer for connection, the following:
Socketeer, from www.soup-kitchen.net, the actual dialler to connect you to the Internet.
!SerialDev, the block serial drivers, and the SerialBuffer module, both available from the Cybervillage website - www.cybervillage.co.uk/acorn/ - in the Software section. Argonet users will find !SerialDev in !Voyager.BlockDrvrs.
The very latest Toolbox and Network/Internet modules, available from http://support.riscos.com/Support/Updates/. The ones on the Acorn User 200th issue CD are not recent enough, and will cause Socketeer to crash when you try and quit it... :-(
The actual setting up
First, make sure you have the details for your ISP (such as DNS servers, username, password, etc.).
Now proceed through the following pages one by one - I have put them in what I think is the best order in which to set things up, but it doesn't really matter (although Socketeer will complain and refuse to run if !Internet has not been setup).
Then either of the following:
or
Note: Voyager and !Internet will not co-exist - if !Internet is configured, Voyager will not connect. This can be quickly solved by moving the file SetUpNet (might be StartUpNet) from !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk and rebooting the computer.
